This quote means that If you  would want your  future to be successful because some of us like   expensive things  and if we get a good career then we would be able to get those things .  But also  not only that we all  want to make our  parents really proud of us . The best way to predict the future is by living right now and to do good things that are going  to bring us good things in the future , and not bad things .
